Netflix Party Review: Cinema Experience Without Cinema

Netflix Party is an extension for watching Netflix synchronously with your friends, wherever they are. If all of you download Netflix Party, you can watch the same movie or show simultaneously, talk on Skype while watching or discuss it just after, sharing the fun.

Design 8/10

There’s little space for design in the app needed to watch movies together, so the movie takes all of the screen. So it’s minimalistic and functional, like most extensions of this sort.

The button of the extension looks inactive all the time unless there’s Netflix page open in your browser. Then it gets red, and it means the extension is active.

Functionality 8/10

The extension synchronizes both video and audio tracks, making sure the show streams synchronously to all those in the party. To benefit from it, you need to enter Netflix on the website through Chrome. All the participants need to have active Netflix subscriptions to stream directly from it.

To start a party, you need to enter the Netflix site and launch some movie, and then click the extension. If you select to be the party starter, the extension generates a link to the party. Send it to those you want to invite to the party, and wait until they respond.

To provide communication between watchers, the extension offers its own chat. But you can run Skype or be connected on your mobile at the same time. Syncing guarantees that if you, say, watch a comedy, you will hear each other laugh simultaneously in real time. It’s a great way to watch movies together with those far: romantic drama with your soulmate, comedy or action with friends, or a random movie with someone random if you happen to be alone at this time.

Usability 7/10

Simple is the word. It takes just two taps to start a party and one tap to join it. But there is some serious job behind it, at least on providing syncing. And this mechanism is subject to issues, like any other. Some of its features look like bugs; say, when you’re watching a batch of episodes, a new Party session is required for each new one.

Despite the great idea, the extension seems to be out of order sometimes. That’s logical, because of cloud syncing; but knowing it doesn’t do any better. At the time we wrote this Netflix Party review (March 2019), the latest issues took place not so long.

Cross-Platform Use 6/10

Like all Chrome extensions, Netflix Party will go wherever desktop Chrome goes. That is, it’s available on Windows, Linux, and OS X. Alas, there’s no version of it for mobile devices or most Smart TV’s. Android-based TV boxes cannot run it either. And it’s a drawback, because it’s much less fun to watch Netflix on your PC when you have a TV. The only way to overcome it is to broadcast your PC to TV, but it’s a problem in itself.

In Conclusion

Netflix Party is an interesting extension for remote cinema parties. But it’s not enough to download Netflix Party: all the participants should use desktops and have subscriptions.

Pros:

  • Simple to use;
  • Synchronized video and audio;
  • Built-in text chat.

Cons:

  • No version for mobile devices or Smart TV, and even for other browsers;
  • Problems on server side happening.
