Video Downloader Professional Review: Everything but YouTube

Video Downloader Professional is an extension that extracts direct links to videos and helps you to have them on your PC. If you prefer to watch it locally, that’s a reason to download Video Downloader Professional and have it in your Chrome.

Design 6/10

There’s little design to be rated. There is just an icon in the extension section, and it turns green when an active tab contains any videos to download. Click it to see the list of videos with their size below; click any video in this list to download it. Yes, it’s all that easy; but do you really want it harder?

Functionality 9/10

When you open the extension on a page that contains videos to download, it fetches their data and parses the links to detect the actual video files. Then, as said above, you need just one click to download any of them. It utilizes the default Chrome downloader, unless you have set up a third party one for certain files.

Alas, it cannot download videos from YouTube, in order not to be banned by Google. So don’t search for another extension that can: you won’t find any. When trying to launch it on YouTube pages, it shows the disclaimer telling it explicitly. On other pages, it just ignores embedded YouTube videos.

The extension cannot download RTMP-protected videos either, so you probably won’t be able to download a video file from Dailymotion. If anything changes, we’ll have to update this Video Downloader Professional review, but for now (March 2019) so it goes. This isn’t the issue with Vimeo, Instagram, and some other video services, and also videos that standalone sites host on their own without RTMP.

Usability 9/10

It’s made so simple that it’s hard to find any flaw in its usability. The downloaded videos are stored in your regular downloads folder. They remain unconverted, so the quality is exactly the same.

If the video is available in various quality versions, the add-on will display all of them, so it’s up to you what version to download. The resolution isn’t displayed explicitly, but you can tell bigger from smaller by the size and sometimes by the name.

Cross-Platform Use 8/10

Like all Chrome extensions, it’s only supported by Chrome. Luckily, you don’t have to run the freshest version, any release that’s not too obsolete will do. It operates the same way regardless of your OS; it’s the same under Windows, OS X, or Linux.

In Conclusion

Despite some limitations, it’s a good tool for saving videos locally. So, download Video Downloader Pro and install it in one click to have this feature in your browser, with no auxiliary applications.

Pros:

  • Simplest interface possible;
  • Gets links in real time;
  • The original quality remains;
  • If resolution is selectable for viewing, it’s selectable for downloading;
  • No problems with finding the downloaded videos.

Cons:

  • Doesn’t download videos from YouTube;
  • Cannot fetch RTMP-protected videos;
  • Sometimes you need to start the video manually for the extension to detect it.
